I am at the very beginning of setting up a Specify6 database.

I am still watching videos on how to use Specify and will visit another department next week to try it out but I have more fundamental question about setting the database up.

My Geology Dept has a large fossil collection including insects, plants, fish, whales, penguins, dolphins, mollusca, brachiopods, corals etc etc. It is currently in a set of hand written ledgers. All specimens are included in a single set of numbers. For example book 5 for plants has the numbers 25,000 to 30,000 in it.

The simplest way may be to have a single Specify Collection (in a single Discipline) containing everything.

Or, there could be 3 Collections (in one Discipline), for plants, invertebrates and vertebrates.

Or, there could be 3 Disciplines (Plants, Vertebrates and Invertebrates), each with a single Collection.

What are the advantages or disadvantages of these three possibilities? I would very much appreciate any comments or suggestions.

    Thank you

    Jeffrey Robinson
